Sunday Gospel John the Baptist was fearless in his work and mission. He spoke out boldly in proclaiming the Word that he had taken into his heart. His heart was so full of love for God and his neighbour that he didn’t care about what others thought of him. His fearless love and zeal meant that his life was cut short, people of influence and power didn’t want him telling them what to do. His enemies rejected him and the message of the good news. Prophets come to us in many different ways; let us ask the Holy Spirit to guide us so that we may recognise their presence among us.

Synod 2023. On Gaudete Sunday as we pray with the Gospel we are reminded of our Baptism – a Baptism of the Holy Spirit, the same Holy Spirit that came upon the apostles at Pentecost. As we consider the synodal journey, we are embarking on we do with the courage and joy of the Holy Spirit. Heavenly Father we ask that we become attentive to the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. May we be faithful witnesses to the Holy Spirit at work in our lives. May the fruits of the Spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control be evident in our lives and in the Church’s synodal journey. Amen

A prayer for love and grace. Lord, you created us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Please show us how to love you with all our hearts and our neighbour as ourselves. Teach us to be practical about loving one another in you and for you and as you desire. Show us our immediate neighbour today; the need of others is your call to our attention. Remind us that you count as done to you what we do for one another, and that our turning away from one another is really turning our backs on you. Make us know, love and serve you in this life and be happy for ever in the next in union with all our brothers and sisters. Amen.
